Todos Santos was designated a Pueblo Magico (aka a Magical Town by the Mexican government). It is one of 120 special communities, similar to San Pancho and Sayulita. There are many of them all over Mexico.
This designation is awarded to those communities that have maintained their original architecture, traditions, history, and culture over time. As well as those that have been of great relevance to the country’s history.
Todos Santos lies at the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna mountain range. It is a place that is surrounded by the cool ocean breeze and the dry heat desert heat. Todos Santos can be found on the Pacific Coast in Mexico's Baja California Sur. This is the long peninsula to the south of California.
It is only one hour north of Cabo, so a day trip can be made easily. However, I recommend staying a few nights to get a feel for the area.
It's a sanctuary for surfers, artists, travelers, and bohemians looking for peace and quiet away from the bustle of Cabo San Lucas. It's a lot like the people who flock to San Pancho to escape from Puerto Vallarta. You'll find plenty of galleries in the town, even though it has a population of only about 6,000.
The once-sleepy colonial town of the beach has been a mecca for artists for many years. However, it has seen a rise in popularity with the opening of the desert-chic Hotel San Cristobal. Although it's not Mexico's most well-kept secret, it's still a peaceful retreat from the bustling city.
1. Grab a paleta
These delicious Mexican popsicles are available at many locations around the city. Just walk around and you will find them. There are many flavors available, including some that contain fresh fruit.
Paleteria La Palama is a popular spot on the edge of town. You can get paletas starting at $1 and ice cream if you prefer.
2. Take photos and wander around the town
You'll soon see why your camera roll is full as you wander around the city. You will find beautiful street scenes with pastel-colored buildings, bougainvillea, and colorful street art everywhere. This is a photographer's paradise.
Calle Benito Juarez is the main street lined with colorful flags that flutter in the wind. It also houses the old church, courtyard and Iglesia Nuestra Senora Del Pilar, and Hotel California. Admire the work of local artists by looking into the galleries.
You can walk around the town in just 15 minutes. This means you will be able to see everything at least once. It's laid out in such a way that it is almost impossible to get lost, which makes it even more convenient.
3. Enjoy a delicious meal at Jazamango
Todos Santos is incomplete without a meal at Jazamango, a farm-to-table Mexican restaurant. You'll find his Baja Med cuisine here, almost all of which are sustainably and locally grown.
You can enjoy grilled octopus, basil pesto pizza, and fancy mezcal cocktails. However, the menu is subject to change depending on what's in season. You won't regret ordering a Tetema.
There's a bakery that can be used if you haven't eaten yet. It's open for coffee and freshly baked bread.
You should note that the hotspot is located just outside of town on a small hill. Depending on where your GPS takes you, you might need to travel down a windy dirt road.
4. Let baby sea turtles go into the ocean
Tortugueros Las Playitas A.C. invites you to witness baby sea turtles make their way to the surf almost every night at sunset. It's amazing to see. Tortugueros Las Playitas A.C., a non-profit environmental conservation group, focuses on the endangered sea turtle population (Leatherback and Black Turtle) and is run primarily by volunteers.
You can observe the hatchlings take their first steps before you bring them down to the sand. Although you won't have the ability to handle the baby turtles at this time, you can enjoy watching them play in the buckets.
Keep in mind that turtle hatches are December-May, with December-February being the busiest hatching period. FYI, if you wish to participate in this activity you will need to visit during these times.
Only a 15-minute drive away from the Centro is the beach Tortugueros Las Playitas. Be aware of potholes and wild horses. You should also be careful as you will be returning in the dark.
You will get dirtier if it rains before you go to the huts. It doesn't matter what day it is, I recommend that you leave your shoes in the car. You will need to remove them before you can enter the hut with baby sea turtles.
This activity may be your favorite, considering all that is available in Todos Santos.
5. Handicrafts available for purchase
You'll find artisan shops everywhere you go, filled with silver jewelry, tree bark paintings, and classical instruments. There are many textiles available - napkins, tablecloths and blankets, backpacks, bags, and tablecloths. Common Mexican trinkets include bright pom-poms and woven hammocks in a variety of colors and patterns. There are also hand-crafted masks and alebrijes (figurines depicting mythical or animal creatures) and ceramics.
These are beautiful to behold and admire. However, many Mexican crafts are not local. They are brought in from other parts of Mexico. It is difficult to find a good deal. But, you have to decide if it's worth the price. There are many souvenirs that are cheaper in San Jose del Cabo or Sayulita.

6. Gallery hopping is possible
Todos Santos is full of galleries, so spending some time admiring the art is a great way to spend your time. Each season there seems to be more galleries opening, with more than a dozen currently in existence. Galeria Logan, Galeria de Todos Santos and La Sonrisa de la Muerte all have a lot of popularity and are easily accessible.
While some offer affordable art, others will elicit sticker shock. These are the true artists of this region.
Please note that some galleries close on Sundays. If gallery hopping is something you want to do in Todos Santos then make sure you go on any other day. You don't have to worry if you happen to be there on Sunday. There are many artworks all around town, including in hotels, restaurants, colonial buildings, and the cultural center museum. There are many paintings in Todos Santos.
7. Fish at Punta Lobos
For many years, fishing has been an integral part of Todos Santos' daily life. The waters of Todos Santos are rich in yellowtail, snapper, and grouper, as well as tuna and mahi-mahi.
Punta Lobos is a great place to fish. It's known for its traditional, deep-sea fishing and where local fishermen launch their panga boats. You don't have to wake up at dawn to see the fishermen haul the fish into their boats. They return home loaded with fresh fish in the afternoon. Here, many restaurants purchase their fish!
It is necessary to hire a boat/register for a fishing trip ahead of time. There is no dock, office, or place to book a tour. This makes it even more difficult, especially if you don't speak Spanish well.
You can also snorkel at Punta Loma, but the waves can be quite powerful, so be extra careful and watch out for boats.
8. Take a hike
Todos Santos is the place to go if you want to get a great workout. There are miles and miles of trails that offer scenic views, crashing waves, and whale sightings in the winter.
There are many trails around the area: the Pacific Bluffs Hike (sea lions, coastal views), Todos Santos sugar port Trail (sea-lions and beaches views), Sierra de la Laguna Biosphere Reserve hike, and numerous self-guided Cliff Hikes.
9. Go swimming or surfing in Pescadero San Pedrito and/or Los Cerritos
You came to Todos Sante to enjoy the beach. However, the waves are too rough to swim on all of the beaches. Playa Cerritos and Pescadero beaches are safer and can be used for swimming in this area of Baja California.
Playa Los Cerritos or Cerritos Beach are great places to surf. These beaches are located just south of Todos Santos and are well-known for their strong surfing. These beaches are great for beginners as well as more experienced surfers. There are smaller waves close to shore and larger waves further out.
Smooth sandy bottom with no coral or rocks! If you fall off the board, it won't scrape your feet.

10. Enjoy a sunset at the beach
Watching the sunset from the beach is one of the most popular things in Todos Santos. You'll be amazed at the beauty of the sunset from Punta Lobos/Hotel San Cristobal or nearby beaches of Pescadero and Cerritos. The sky was lit up like a firework!
Todos Santos, located on the Pacific side of the Baja Peninsula, allows you to view the sun setting directly into the ocean. It's a truly breathtaking sight.
